16th Annual International Conference of Pakistan Society for Rheumatology was held in Lahore from 12th – 14th October, 2012 at Pearl Continental Hotel in collaboration with Division of Rheumatology, FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry, Lahore.

The theme of this conference was “Move to Improve: Every Day Counts in Rheumatic Disease”. This theme has been adapted to show solidarity with APLAR’s “every day counts” initiative. It highlights the fact that patients with rheumatic diseases suffer un-necessarily because of the delay in diagnosis and initiation of appropriate treatment.

This conference was very well attended by Rheumatologists from all over the country, Family Physicians, Medical specialists, residents in internal medicine as well as by rheumatology fellows in training, medical students ad allied health professionals. The proceedings of first day started with “Arthritis Walk” in Fatima Memorial Hospital in connection with world arthritis day, to mark solidarity with millions of arthritis patients all over the world. The walk was followed by a Public awareness proramme at Pearl Continental Hotel arranged in collaboration with Mir Khalil-ur-Rehaman Foundation. The expert panel educated general public about arthritis and related diseases. Patients and their families interacted actively in question and answer session.

The official proceedings started on 13 th Oct, 2012. There were 5 scientific sessions over two days period along with workshops, oral abstract presentation and meet the expert sessions.

The conference attracted distinguished national as well as international speakers from UK, Netherlands, Bangladesh, UAE and USA

In the inaugural Session, Dr. Terence Gibson from Guys and St.Thomas NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK delivered a state of the art lecture on Gout.

The second state of the art lecture, delivered by Dr. Humeira Badsha (UAE) on “Rheumatologic Emergencies” was much appreciated.

There were excellent talks by Prof. Hans J. Rasker (Netherland) on “Managing Difficult Lupus” and “Guilt and Shame in Rheumatoid Arthritis”.

This conference was supported by national as well as multinational pharmaceuticals who had show cased their products and contributed towards success of this conference.

Hopefully this conference has set a new bench mark for the future events of PSR.
